Explore Canada’s connections to the global economy in four ways: gross domestic product (GDP), trade, foreign investment and immigration. Adjust timelines and other filters in our digital game.

Curious how Canada compares with other countries in the goods and services it produces? Have you ever wondered where most immigrants to Canada have come from? Or what major goods Canada imports and exports? Launch our online tool to explore more.

Please note that the data for GDP is currently shown in purchasing power parity, and not in Canadian dollars. An update to the online tool is forthcoming but the rankings remain the same.

Launch the game.

This game is optimized for web browsers on desktops, tablets and phones.

About this game

Each section allows you to follow the historical development of the Canadian economy and our reliance on foreign trade. Explore these four topics:

  1. gross domestic product (GDP)—the measure of goods and services produced by a country
  2. immigration flows to Canada from different regions around the world
  3. foreign investment in Canada and Canadian investment abroad
  4. the types of goods Canada imports and exports

Extensions

If you’d like to explore Canada’s role in the global economy more deeply, try one of these activities.

  • Host a foreign exchange fair. Research a country featured in the online tool and explore its economy, trade and currency.
  • Explore Canadian immigration by regions, countries and time periods. For some ideas, see resources and stories from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 or the Government of Canada. Or invite a guest speaker in to tell their immigration and economic story.
  • What major goods and services are made in your region that support Canada’s economy? Create a tour of local businesses to learn about what they produce.
