About the note
The image of the Queen was engraved by George Gundersen of the British American Bank Note Company (BABN) based on a photograph by Anthony Buckley, then‑photographer for the Royal Family.
The back vignette features a scene near Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet) on the rugged northeastern tip of Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin Island). The original photograph was taken in the early 1950s by Douglas Wilkinson, a filmmaker who was documenting the daily life of the traditional hunting party of Joseph Idlout. Idlout and his party—many are family members—are seen here readying two kayaks to hunt a pod of narwhals that had just been sighted in the bay. All the men in this image have been clearly identified by family and community members. The engraving is by C. Gordon Yorke of BABN.
