About the note
C. Gordon Yorke of the British American Bank Note Company was one of the primary engravers for this series and created the image of Sir Robert Borden on this note. The source photo is attributed to Dupras & Colas, a Montréal studio. This is Borden’s first of four appearances so far on a Bank of Canada note.
G. Hedley Doty took the 1939 photograph of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, on which the vignette engraving is based. At that time, the Grand Banks schooners—two of which are on this note—were quickly disappearing from the Maritimes’ fishing industry. Lunenburg had once been the home of hundreds of these ships and is the birthplace of all three versions of the Bluenose, which has appeared on Canada’s 10‑cent coin since 1937. In 1995, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Lunenburg as a World Heritage Site. C. Gordon Yorke is, once again, the engraver of this image.
