About the note
Edward, Prince of Wales, was the first-born child of King George V and Queen Mary. He is engraved on this note by Harry P. Dawson of British American Bank Note Company. Prince Edward is wearing the uniform of an army colonel. King George died less than a year after this note was issued, and Edward became King—then abdicated the throne nine months later. No Canadian currency was ever issued with King Edward VIII on it.
The vignette on the back was also engraved by Dawson. It is an allegory—an image that represents a theme or virtue. The hammer, level and gear—along with the muscular figure seated on a generator building—all represent electric power. The landscape behind these images is nature harnessed by humans for their electricity needs.
