About the note

Queen Mary, wife of King George V, graces the face of this note. The Queen’s portrait was taken by British photographer Hay Wrightson and originally engraved twice, once each by Will Ford of American Bank Note Company and Harry P. Dawson of British American Bank Note Company (BABN). Ultimately, Dawson’s engraving was chosen for the note. The Queen is wearing the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara.

The vignette on the back is an allegory representing the theme of transportation. The image was engraved by Harry P. Dawson and George Gundersen, both of BABN. The figure is the Roman god Mercury, who is both the messenger of the gods and the god of travel and commerce. The staff Mercury carries (a caduceus) and the wings on his hat and feet are ancient symbols of messengers.
