Like you, the government needs to manage its cash on a daily basis. Every day money comes to the government. For example, when you pay taxes, that money goes into the government’s bank account. But the government also has a lot of payments to make every day, like childcare benefits, education and healthcare. That’s a lot of different things to care about. So, the Bank helps by forecasting how much the government needs to spend each day, and makes sure it has enough money on hand to cover it. The Bank of Canada handles between $6 billion and $8 billion dollars for the government every day. That's a lot of money!
