“The what museum”? Yes, you heard right, we are bidding a fond farewell to the name that served us so well for over 30 years: the Currency Museum. The new name, the Bank of Canada Museum, was chosen months ago but we kept it a deep, dark secret until our new website went live.

Though naturally we are aware that the former Museum space is being gutted, the reality of seeing it empty is still pretty strange for most of us here. In the last blog of this series we showed you the empty cafeteria space that will become the new Museum, as well as some images of the old Museum as it was at the time: stuffed with odds and ends of exhibit cases, the occasional display still on the walls.

We are coming up on a year since we closed the doors on the physical museum. During that year, we’ve worked very hard to make sure everybody knows that we are still a functioning museum and one that will be opening its doors again in a few years on a beautiful new space, with an expanded mission and mandate.

In early February, a small group from the Bank’s Communications Department booked a brief tour of the main floor and first basement at the Wellington Street head office. It’s still in the demolition phase of the renovation.

If we had a nickel for every time people asked questions like that, we’d have… Well, I suppose we have roughly that number of nickels already; we have a long history as a currency museum after all. When the museum was open, somebody would ask a similar question several times a week.

After four months in our new digs the Collections Team is starting to settle in. But even though most of the boxes have been unpacked there is still a lot of work to do. In 2014 we will be collaborating with the Exhibitions Team on travelling exhibits and coming up with ideas for the new museum space.

We here at the Currency Museum hope you had a fabulous holiday season. We know we did, though maybe a little too fabulous for some of us. As we crossed over into the New Year we had a chance to reflect on the year that had just passed. 2013 presented our team with some pretty big challenges and some tough goodbyes, but it also had some great new adventures and exciting new initiatives.
